Client Spotlight
This month we want to recognize our SolidWorks CAD client Donny McCall of Invis-A-Rack. This past month he appeared on the television show Shark Tank and then a few days later on Fox & Friends. On Shark Tank, Donny was trying to acquire investors to expand the production of his innovative product. In addition to his product design, Donny showed the viewers his commitment to expanding jobs for Americans. Congratulations to Donny for all of his achievements.

Tips From the Techs |

Working with Hole Wizard in 2012:
In SolidWorks 2012, there is a small but welcomed change to the Hole Wizard tool. Previously, after defining the parameters of the hole, you would select the position tab and click on a point to drop a hole into your model. The issue with the previous Wizard was the inability to “wake up” existing points or other geometry for use as a reference for placing the first hole. After placing the first hole on your part, you were forced to deselect the point tool from the toolbar and then move the center point of your hole to the desired location on your part...

Properly saving a STL file:
Most file types do not have options associated with the quality of the file when you save it. This is not the case with .stl files. In SolidWorks, when you select the .stl file extension in the "save as type" drop down menu, an options tab becomes available. Within this tab you can change

SolidWorks in the News
Just a few years ago, the iPod revolutionized personal electronics worldwide. Tony Fadell, the designer who spearheaded the team that brought the iPod to market, will keynote SolidWorks World 2012, the Company's annual summit of engineers and designers. Dassault Systemes SolidWorks Corp.'s SolidWorks World event will take place February 12-15, 2012, in San Diego, and focus on the theme of "united by design." Known as the "Father of the iPod," Fadell made his mark via his former positions as Apple's senior vice president of the iPod division and adviser to Steve Jobs. Today, Fadell is changing the game again as founder and CEO of Nest, a hot startup that's introduced the world's first learning thermostat.

General Interest
Co-founder of Sun Microsystems Bill Joy famously said: “No matter who you are, most of the smartest people work for someone else.” That statement has since gone on to be dubbed “Joy’s Law.”
So, assuming that declaration is true, it makes sense to look elsewhere to find genius—no matter where that else may be. There are many proponents backing this notion in, for instance, the software development industry, where programmers from around the world often contribute to a single product.
“But the concept of open innovation had not really hit the life sciences or medtech industries until recently,” says Peter von Dyck, chairman and CEO of E-Zassi. “Now, open innovation is a big deal, and everyone wants to embrace it as a better way to find new products,” he says. “Obviously, no one company, no matter how big it is, can innovate everything in their area of expertise. So it really makes sense to look outside.”

Four Vermont Tech students were chosen as finalists for the inaugural Cornell Cup, USA, a college-level systems engineering competition, created to empower students to become inventors of innovative applications of embedded technology.
Their team, the Knights of the Workbench’s concept is to develop a sophisticated device to help combat binge drinking and drunk driving. The team is constructing a combination robot drink-mixer/ computer that will use an RFID card reader to scan the magnetic strip on the back of a patron’s license.
