TECH TIPS & RESOURCES

Flow Freezing can help to reduce calculation time in some thermal Flow studies:
As with any analysis, there is a tradeoff between accuracy and computational effort or time. The more cells that you pack into a mesh, the longer the study will take to solve. It is often the case in a Flow analysis that several different processes develop at different rates as the calculation progresses. This is often the case with heat transfer problems with forced convection, where the fluid flow process develops more quickly than the thermal gradient. The calculation as a whole will then march along at the pace of the slowest process, which can often lead to long solution times for complex studies.
> Flow Freezing, found under the Advanced tab in the Calculation Controls dialog box, is a tool that can be very useful in these situations. Flow Freezing simply freezes the value of all flow parameters, with the exception of temperatures and fluid substance concentrations, and allows the CPU to focus solely on these processes. In other words, if the flow parameters have converged and the thermal parameters have not, Flow Freezing will allow the solver to fix the values of the flow parameters (use the previous result) and continue to solve for thermal and fluid concentration values. The most common method of doing this is by assigning periodic freezing, where the flow values are held constant for some number of iterations and then unfreezing (solving them) for another number of iterations.

> Use Flow Freezing with caution. It is important that the flow parameters should not be changing significantly with respect to the thermal parameters, or your solution may converge incorrectly. Save your results before manually from the solver window before activating Flow Freezing, so you can restart the study if the calculation diverges. Use goals to track both flow and thermal parameters, so you can decide when Flow Freezing may be appropriate. Flow Freezing is usually not recommended for natural convection problems because of the sensitive interdependency of flow and thermal parameters.
